A parliamentary commission wants the management at the National Forestry Authority to take action against the destruction of national natural forests. The committee criticizes the Authority’s soft handling the encroachers that have devastated the country’s natural resource, and blamed the ineffectiveness of the NFA staff.
However, according to the Executive Director NFA Michael Mugisha, the land belonging to NFA especially the central forest reserves were given to investors to develop their enterprises like the mash rooming real Estates Business in the central parts of the country. He said NFA has taken some companies to courts of Law seeking the cancellation of their land titles, but it cannot act without a the cancellation of Land titles by the Courts.
Meanwhile, Uganda has lost big percentages of its natural forests. According to the Sector performing report for the Ministry of water for the financial year 2012/2013, reveals that the area of natural forests and woodlands is drastically reducing. By 2009, Uganda’s forest cover was 18%, having declined from 24%in 1990.
